How to Safely Clean Out Your Ears: Expert Advice from Resonate Hearing Centre

When it comes to ear care, less is more. While many people think cleaning their ears regularly is necessary, the truth is your ears are pretty good at cleaning themselves. Still, earwax buildup can occasionally cause discomfort or even affect your hearing. So, how do you safely clean out your ears without causing damage? Here’s what our audiologists at Resonate Hearing Centre recommend.

First, What Is Earwax and Why Do We Have It?

Earwax (also known as cerumen) is a natural substance produced by glands in your ear canal. It helps trap dust, debris, and bacteria, preventing them from reaching deeper into your ears. It also has lubricating properties and helps protect the skin inside your ear. For most people, earwax naturally works its way out of the ear on its own.

What Not to Do When Cleaning Your Ears

Let’s start with what not to do. The biggest mistake we see is people using cotton buds (or Q-tips) to clean their ears. While it might seem like they’re getting rid of wax, cotton buds often push the wax further in, which can cause blockages or even damage the eardrum.

Other things to avoid:

  • Ear candles: These are not only ineffective but can also be dangerous.
  • Inserting any objects (keys, hairpins, etc.) into your ears.
  • Over-cleaning: Constantly removing earwax can irritate the ear canal and lead to dryness or infection.

What Can you do at Home

A few drops of olive oil spray for 2-3 days in the ear can help soften the wax. Earol or Otex olive oil sprays are easily available over the counter or online.

If you still experience pain, hearing loss, or a blocked sensation, it’s best to seek professional help.
